It is said that water gives us life. You see, it regulates multiple functions in our body and we cannot survive without it. However, most people don’t know that it can also help with weight management. If your diet is healthy and you exercise regularly, make sure you’re consuming enough water each day to aid weight loss.

Water is the base for many factors that play a key role in weight loss such as digestion and muscle function. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that drinking more water can help in weight management and weight loss.

Here are 4 ways drinking water for weight loss helps:

1. It can help burn more calories

A study published in the journal Acta Physiologica found that 12 participants who drank half a litre of cold and room temperature water burned between 2 and 3 per cent more calories, respectively, than usual in the 90 minutes after drinking water.

So, since the participants experienced an increase in energy expenditure, we can say that water can also temporarily increase your body’s resting energy expenditure. Moreover, drinking cold water may further burn more calorie.

2. It suppresses your appetite

Drinking water before a meal is a good idea for those who want to control the number of calories consumed. Doing so fills up your stomach and helps you avoid overeating. The same study mentioned above found that 50 families who had half a litre of water before their meals reduced their body weight, body fat and body mass index in eight weeks.

3. It is necessary to burn fat

Water helps in digestion and metabolising the stored fat and carbohydrates. When you consume water, it contributes to burning the extra fat in your body. A review published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition also confirmed that increased water intake can help in fat loss.

4. Reduces your liquid calorie intake

Be it consciously or unconsciously, we all tend to load up on calories by consuming liquids throughout the day. Drinking water is a great way to avoid consuming extra calories from other beverages such as soda, juice, or sweetened coffee and tea.

A study published in The Americal Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when the participants replaced high-caloric beverages with non-caloric drinks every day for 6 months, they lost about 2 to 2.5 per cent of their body weight.
