Yes dear, you read it absolutely right. Sitting for too long doesn’t just make your bums numb, but also has an adverse impact on your health. That’s why health experts suggest taking breaks after every hour.  Sitting doesn’t just put pressure on your lower body, but it also obstructs blood circulation – that’s the reason you feel numbness in your body parts.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg, because when we dig deep, you’ll get a reality check. Come, let’s find out about all the problems that you might have to face, if you sit all the time.

“We’re spending hours and hours on our chairs, especially with everyone working from home. This sedentary lifestyle, along with covid-19, has given rise to several health problems that can make your future full of hassles. I am going to share the most common problems people face, when they keep sitting for long hours,” says Dr Samudrika Patil, clinical endocrinologist and CEO of Vedicure Healthcare and Wellness.

1. Hypertension

Initially, we were all so excited, when a lockdown was announced. From home workouts to making dalgona coffee, we were trying out various activities to keep ourselves busy. But with time, we have started spending more time on our work stations than on our yoga mats. Well, this is going to cause real harm!

“A sedentary lifestyle is more harmful than we think. Most lifestyle disorders including diabetes mellitus, hypertension (high bp), high cholesterol and cardiovascular illnesses become preventable with daily moderate exercise,” suggests Dr Patil.

2. Spinal issues

Well, it’s a no-brainer that sitting in the same posture for long hours can lead to pain in your spine.

“Long sitting hours can affect your hips and back (spine health) quite negatively. It can affect your posture, leading your flexor muscles to become shorter. This can lead to a change in posture, which could also affect your spine health. It could cause compression of discs and can also lead to earlier degeneration. Unfortunately, the consequences could be extremely painful,” says Dr Patil.

3. Weakness in legs and glutes

According to Dr Patil, sitting for too long can make your large leg muscles weak, leading to general weakness with respect to physical strength.

4. And of course, weight gain

Weight gain and lowered metabolism is a major consequence of sitting all the time! Physical inactivity could cause a decline in your metabolism, and in turn, lead to weight gain.

Other than these problems, there are some people who have also shown some signs of anxiety and clot formation, but these cases are very few.

Here’s what you can do to avoid these problems

1) Just a 30-minute walk around the house could lead to better health.

2) Yoga is great for metabolism, weight control and to avoid hormonal and other health issues.

3) A balanced diet with less carbs.

4) An ergonomically designed chair for your neck and back that will reduce the negative effects of sitting too long.

5) Skipping is a great exercise. Just squeeze in 20 minutes, right before work.

So ladies, don’t forget to take breaks every now and then, and keep these health issues away!
