A Harriet Stowe famously said, “A woman’s health is her capital.” But all too often, we women ignore our health. Lack of time, work or home-related stress, lack of awareness, and hesitancy in talking about sexual health are all factors that contribute to this. But even common health problems must raise an alarm for you to take them seriously.

Yes, women have common complaints which are often ignored but which may be a sign of something more serious. So, take charge of the following.

6 health problems women must not ignore

1. Pain during sex

Women are often hesitant to talk about pain during intercourse. However, painful sex can also be a symptom of endometriosis, a condition in which the inner uterine lining deposits outside the uterus. It can also be due to PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease) which is the infection of reproductive organs often accompanied by vaginal discharge. Painful sex can also be due to insufficient lubrication and a dry vagina.

2. Irregular or abnormal menses

Menses should occur regularly every 21-35 days. Heavy flow, mid-cycle bleeding or spotting, Prolonged cycles, it can be caused by hormonal diseases like thyroid or PCOD or fibroids which are benign tumors of the uterus.

Bleeding post intercourse or bleeding after attaining menopause should be taken seriously and can be a sign of cervical or uterine cancer and needs to be checked.

3. Breast changes

Lumps in breasts can be due to harmless conditions like fibroadenoma or fibroadenomas. However, breast lumps can also be a sign of breast cancer. Breast cancer in women is often detected in advanced stages due to a lack of awareness. Lumps in breasts that seem harder and different from the rest of the breast tissue or discharge from the nipples, need to be evaluated. Women should have regular checkups to screen for breast cancer and also be aware of the methods of breast self-examination for early detection of any breast changes.

4. Unexpected weight loss and gain

While a sudden unexpected weight loss might be a joy, but sudden weight loss can also be a sign of tuberculosis as well as some cancers or thyroid disorders and needs to be evaluated. Sudden weight gain can be due to PCOD or thyroid issues and can be managed very well if detected.

5. Fatigue

A lot of women feel tired all the time. Frequent fatigue can be due to anemia, thyroid disorder, micronutrients, and vitamin D deficiency and should be checked. The feeling of feeling tired even after a full night’s sleep can also be the cause of stress, anxiety, depression, or even obstructive sleep apnea and therefore should never be ignored

6. Abdominal bloating

A lot of women feel bloated or gassy, especially prior to menses. This is one of the more common health problems. However, if feeling bloated happens very frequently, it needs to be evaluated and it can be a sign of irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, or even ovarian cancer.
