If there’s one thing that’s elusive today, it is getting proper sleep. Haven’t we all tried enough hacks to get those zzz’s, but to no avail? Well, a certain sleep position will not just help you with deep sleep, but will also increase intimacy with your partner. Any guesses? Yes, we are speaking about the spooning sleeping position.

Wondering what it really is? This is a position in which you sleep face to face with your partner. As the name says, when you are in a spooning position, it looks like two spoons are stacked sideways. The one who is being hugged from behind is called the little spoon, while the other is the big spoon. Some people also like to intertwine their legs with their partner’s. On the other hand, some just want to keep it next to each other.

What are the benefits of spooning?

The benefits of spooning are many, say experts. As per Niharika Khanna, a Delhi-based sleep expert, this position helps to release oxytocin, which provides not just physical but mental health benefits.

As per a study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine, the 38 participants, aged between 20 and 49 years, and who lived together, were in close contact with their partners for 10 minutes. After this exercise, these individuals rested separately for 10 minutes. Research revealed a strong link between partner support and higher oxytocin levels. Plus, the feel-good hormone also helped with better sleep.

Another research published in the Journal of Biological Psychology found that the higher the level of oxytocin, the lower the blood pressure levels and heart rate, especially in premenopausal women. The study took into account 59 women who experienced warm contact with their partners, ending with hugs.

But how much spooning is essential?

Believe it or not, just 10 minutes is good enough to produce oxytocin levels. It leads to lower levels of cortisol, which means reduced stress, and increased intimacy with your partner.

Nuha Parikshit, a relationship expert tells HealthShots, “This sleeping position requires close contact with your partner, and brings you closer both physically and emotionally. It’s sure to help you improve your bond with your significant other, and if you think that things are heating up, you can always end up having sex in the spooning position too. That’s also good if you are looking to conceive.”
