Believe it or not, a French kiss is like the perfect appetizer to the ‘main course’! It leads to arousal, releases a lot of happy hormones which keep stress and anxiety away, helps you exercise your facial muscles, and also strengthen your emotional bond with your partner. However, it’s good to be mindful of the likely side effects of a French kiss too.

Why is oral hygiene before kiss important?

Yes, kissing can be a cause of sexually transmitted diseases like Herpes, Cytomegalovirus or Syphilis, as well as expose you to bacteria through saliva exchange. Your mouth is a route to your gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. Besides that, your oral cavity can be affected if the person you may be kissing has poor hygiene. And so my dear, while you ought to be careful when you lean in for a kiss, even you must take care of your oral hygiene.

Dr Gunita Singh, BDS MD Dental Lasers, Director, Dentem and Associate Consultant, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, says that “fresh breath and excellent oral hygiene” are a must for a safe kissing experience.

According to the expert, practicing some simple, everyday oral hygiene tips can be helpful.

“These can really improve your oral health, give a long life to your teeth, improve confidence by improving breath freshness and in turn save you from many more health issues,” says Dr Singh.

Ways to get best oral hygiene

1. Don’t forget to brush twice a day:

Whether it’s morning or night, brushing is must. Due to busy schedules, people usually forget to brush at night or take it for granted. But this is the biggest mistake that they do. For maintaining oral hygiene, brushing twice is the key essential thing to follow.

2. Gum massages:

Spend some time with your gums as they are the foundation of our teeth. Healthy gums are equal to healthy teeth. Massaging in a circular motion for 5 minutes in the morning and evening with an oil of your choice (olive oil, vitamin E oil, almond oil) can do wonders for your gums.

3. Tongue cleaning should be priority:

Once a day, tounge cleaning with glycerine and a cotton pad can prove to be magical not only to get that lovely pink tongue, but also bacteria-free oral cavity.

4. Mouth wash:

Rinse your mouth after every meal for two to three times with a mouthwash of your choice. Swirl it for atleast 30 seconds each time for best results.

5 tips for extra confidence on oral hygiene before kiss:

1. Mix aloe vera and glycerine:

Aloe vera and its benefits have been praised for decades. It does wonders on our plaque and tartar too. Mix it with glycerine and scrub it on your teeth to get shiny set of pearls.

2. Rub the teeth with orange peel:

You can rub the inside of the orange peel directly onto your teeth. This will help to fight tartar building microorganisms on the enamel. You can also mash the peel and apply it on the stained area. Leave it for some time and then rinse to see a remarkable difference.

3. Munch on sesame seeds:

Pop a handful of sesame seeds into your mouth. Chew them but do not swallow them. Brush on them directly, and they will act as scrub and remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth.

4. Strawberries:

Strawberries contain whitening enzyme malic acid and can do wonders for our smile. To get pearly white teeth, rub strawberry directly onto the teeth or make a puree and rub like a paste.

5. Baking soda:

Baking soda with glycerine is also very helpful, but only once or twice a week, and for adults only.

How can a dentist help?

You may visit a dentist for scaling, polishing or other procedures that can leave you with white sparkling teeth that toothpastes promise but don’t deliver.

“Once a year professional oral prophylaxis is a must. And when one is already visiting the dentist for a sitting of scaling, 5 minutes of polishing adds an extra shine to your teeth,” says Dr Singh.
