Enjoy making foam out of your shampoo on your hair strands, do you? That may not be the best for your hair. If you’ve been receiving and believing unsolicited advice from your relatives or friends about how shampooing daily can damage your hair or sulphate shampoos are bad for hair, rest easy! We have some myths about shampoo that you must know.

Common myths about shampoo

Popular dermatologist Dr Jaishree Sharad shared some common myths about shampoos through her recent Instagram post.

1. Myth: Changing shampoos will prevent hair fall

Fact: Your scalp is supposed to be cleaned by shampoo. Depending on whether your scalp is dry or greasy and the weather, you should switch your shampoo.

When your hair suggests it, switch your shampoo and conditioner. Instead of only reviewing your products at the end of each bottle, do it frequently. Think about purchasing perhaps two or three different shampoos and conditioners, then choose which one to use based on how your hair feels. However, switching shampoos won’t stop hair loss.

2. Myth: Daily shampoo will cause hair fall

Fact: You should shampoo your hair every day to maintain it clean if your scalp is exposed to pollution, dirt, or sweat.

People with very fine hair, those who exercise frequently (and perspire a lot), and those who live in humid climates should wash their hair frequently.

3. Myth: Sulphate shampoos are bad for hair

Fact: Sulphate is a cleansing agent which aids in removing oil and dirt from the scalp. Shampoo should be selected based on your hair type. Some hair types are suitable for sulphate in shampoo and some may not be suitable for sulphate in shampoo.

Sulphate is a great cleansing agent but its excessive use can make your hair dry and frizzy. As a result of these chemicals, it removes natural oils from the scalp and hair. It can exacerbate certain conditions and worsen your situation if you have a sensitive scalp. So before using it, kindly visit your dermatologist.

4. Myth: Shampoo should be applied to hair strands

Fact: Shampoo should be applied on the scalp. The purpose of shampoo is to remove dirt, grime, perspiration salts, oil, and dead skin buildup from the scalp.

Since the roots are often the oiliest, the scalp needs the most care when shampooing. Due to their relative ageing and dryness, the hair’s ends become more dried as a result of shampoo washing.

What is the right way to shampoo hair?

Use your fingers and palms to gently scrub your hair from the roots to the ends. Avoid using your nails to scrub your scalp as this can lead to wounds that develop into itchy scabs and ulcers. Only apply conditioner to your ends. More moisturizer is not necessary for your scalp.
