So many of you have dealt with or are dealing with split ends in your hair. This condition happens when the ends of your hair become dry and brittle. Besides the issue with aesthetics, split ends are also an indicator of hair damage.

Split ends, or ‘trichoptilosis,’ occur due to the splitting or fraying of the hair shaft due to a number of factors ranging from the use of chemical products to genetics.

While there is no straight jacket treatment for this condition, there are certain tips that you could follow to prevent split ends and manage them to boost the health of your hair.

What causes split ends?

Genetic profile is perhaps a major driver for this condition, however, the common culprits are exposure to extreme weather conditions, excessive blow-drying, hair straightening, and applying an overheated curling rod. Using chemical hair products also causes split ends, and so does taking hot showers, forcefully brushing tangled hair, and sleeping with your hair tied back.

Here’s how you can prevent split ends

There are various measures that you can take to prevent the severity and frequency of split ends:

1. Regularly trim your hair

Every 5 to 7 weeks is an ideal frequency to get your hair as this will prevent split ends from travelling up the shaft of your hair. This tip also helps those of you who have a habit of peeling your split ends apart, as you should let a hairdresser take care of it for you.

2. Take care of your diet

Yes, the root cause is often internal and getting the right nutrients will help with making your hair supple and healthy. Biotin and folic acid are known to improve the length and thickness of hair. Foods such as walnuts and brown rice are full of biotin and they metabolize fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, thereby strengthening both the hair. Spinach and oranges have folic acid and can help with the production of red blood cells, enabling hair growth.

3. Be careful about the products you use

Products such as clarifying shampoos can be hard on the hair and can strip it of necessary oils. A number of hair products are full of toxic chemicals, drying agents, and sulfates, causing your hair to break and lose its strength over time. So, be careful about the products you are applying and make decisions based on your hair type and incorporate natural hair care products with almond or olive oil from time to time.

4. Refrain from colouring your hair

Hair colour contains bleaching agents and chemicals that make your hair weak, dry and brittle. So, although it’s a difficult path for many of you, avoiding hair colouring can help prevent split ends.

5. Protect your hair from heat

The extreme heat generated by hairstyling tools can cause the hair to break and become frayed. Try using a heat protectant before blow-drying, curling, or straightening your hair to avoid hair damage and the development of split ends.

6. Be gentle with your hair

When managing and styling your hair, it is important to be as gentle as possible. Try avoiding brushing your hair as soon as you get out of the shower as wet hair is susceptible to breakage. Handle your hair gently when it comes to drying using a towel as twisting and wringing can break hair strands. You could also consider avoiding tight hairstyles, such as braids, buns or ponytails.

So, ladies, exercise caution and follow these tips to minimize your risk of getting split ends.
