Acing the art of crafting a skincare routine is no joke. You pick, choose, and then experiment with various desi and videshi tricks to get that perfect blend that suits your skin type cent per cent. But amidst all this experimentation you can’t deny the risk you take. The failure of just one DIY hack can make your skin go for a toss.

Now that you are at home and have some time to spare, we’re sure you must be trying your hands on some home hacks that claim to help your oily skin. But as organic as they may sound not every product or kitchen ingredient is made for you.

That’s why we consulted with dermatologist Dr Rinky Kapoor to make this list of kitchen ingredients that you must never put on your greasy skin.

Oily skin means acne and pimples. And due to the sensitivity of this skin type, we have to be extra cautious before applying anything to it and that’s why we should be cautious of what we use and whatnot,” she says.

Here are five ingredients you must avoid if you have oily skin:

1. Coconut oil
“Products that are thick in consistency should be avoided on oily skin as they will just make another layer on it and won’t let your skin breathe. At times dust also gets trapped under the oil and leads to problems like itching and rashes. That’s why applying coconut oil, even in a mixture, is a big no,” she suggests.

2. Malai
We think that malai or cream is made of milk and might have lactic acid that can make our skin smooth. But ladies, this malai is nothing but sheer fat which can make your skin look even greasier.

“I have seen women with oily skin applying malai in the night like an overnight serum and sleeping over it. This is just wrong! Applying malai will hydrate your skin to an extent which isn’t required. Instead of that milk is a better option and that too double toned for a few minutes,” she recommends.

3. Besan
We know it sounds weird as besan is one of the most common base ingredients for a face pack, but you must steer clear of it if you have oily skin according to Dr Kapoor.

“People with oily skin have large pores and that’s why they are allergic to certain stuff. I have seen patients coming to me saying that besan or gram flour packs have given them rashes. So, that’s why you need to first check whether whatever you are applying is suitable for your skin or not,” she says.

4. Petroleum jelly
Petroleum jelly comes with a lot of benefits but it rarely suits oily skin. “Well, petroleum jelly also comes with the same philosophy of density. Plus, it clogs the pores and doesn’t let your skin breathe properly. So, I think you should avoid this one as well. Also, using it with lime juice is also not going to help,” she suggests.

5. Almond oil
If you have oily or sensitive skin then you should also steer clear from the hallowed almond oil. “Using almond oil can also lead to acne breakout and can eventually make your T-zone super duper oily. Instead, you can go for tea tree oil if you want but just see it suits your skin,” Dr Kapoor said.

“Another thing that people with oily skin should remember is that they need to be vary of sheet masks. They have to be utterly cautious about the ingredients that are used in these sheet masks before putting them on,” she concludes.

There you go, ladies. Now, whenever you want to fix your T-zone you know what kitchen ingredient you can lay your hands on. So, try whatever you want except those above five.
