Honey is branded as the golden elixir in the skincare world. However, there is one more product manufactured by nature’s hard workers— the bees. These buzzing bees not only make honey and beeswax, but propolis too! Before we go on and on about the benefits of bee propolis, let’s know what it is.

What is bee propolis?

Propolis, also known as bee glue, is a natural resin-like substance that comes from honey bees as they build their hives. Unlike honey derived from nectar, propolis is derived from the sap of coniferous trees, such as pine and hemlock trees, which never lose their leaves. Bees use propolis as a glue in constructing and repairing their hives and preventing invaders from stealing honey!

This bee product is extensively famed for its benefits in the international world. However, India is just beginning to realize the potential it holds in treating wounds, burns and skin ailments.

To know more about the benefits of bee propolis on skin, Health Shots spoke to Dr Monica Kapoor, a celebrity cosmetologist and director at FLAWLESS Cosmetic clinics and ILACAD Institute.

What are the benefits of bee propolis?

Dr Kapoor says, “As bee propolis has been renowned for its healing properties, it is not a coincidence that it is taking the center-stage as a natural beauty ingredient to assist the healing and soothing of sensitive skin.”

Here are some wonderful benefits of bee propolis and using products that have it:

1. Heals and prevents skin ailments

This incredible natural substance has also been found to be beneficial in helping heal wounds or skin issues such as acne or eczema.

2. Prevents acne

“There are many propolis washes, extracts, and oils that are meant to heal acne and reduce inflammation,” says Dr Kapoor. Propolis protects the skin from the damage from the harmful environment such as air pollution, sun exposure, and radiation which prevents pimples from flaring up.

3. Reverses skin ageing

The free radicals, created from environmental pollution, damage the skin, ranging from the changing of skin tone, blemish and dark spots on the skin. They also weaken the skin structure causing early signs of ageing such as wrinkles and premature skin. Propolis, abundant in antioxidants, protects the skin from free radicals and keeps the skin looking young and bright.

4. Soothes sensitive skin

Propolis is gentle on sensitive skin, and can even help reduce redness. This redness can be related to acne or pimples or just sensitivity. This bee product is beneficial for individuals with mild to moderate forms of acne.

5. Moisturizes and strengthens the skin barrier

During facial massage, propolis oil may help moisturize the skin while giving it an antibacterial treatment. It also keeps the skin’s barrier hydrated. Propolis products tend to be rich, nourishing and sometimes even sticky in texture and keep the skin looking plump and nourished.

6. Treats wrinkles and gives even toned skin

Propolis is very effective in reducing signs of cold sores, minor burns, appearance of wrinkles and textured skin. The combined properties of propolis may help to keep the skin blemish free. As a natural sealant, propolis also helps the skin to retain more moisture to maintain a healthier, more vibrant complexion.

Considering the amazing benefits of bee propolis, its extracts are commonly used in face serums and face toners or essence products. Try to get your hands on one if you want to include this game-changing ingredient in your skin care routine.
