From hot chocolate to sweater weather, there are multiple reasons we all look forward to the winter season. Our skin, however, dreads the cold season because of the dryness it brings along. Those who have dry skin and struggle to keep it moisturised even during summer months find that their dermal issues only aggravate, as the winter season progresses.

There is one trick that can help you minimise that damage! You need to start early in the season. Just when you start noticing a nip in the air, take steps to protect your skin. Small changes to your routine can ensure that your skin stays healthy, in spite of the cold, dry season.

Here are five things you need to start doing right away, if you have dry skin and want to protect it from the harsh cold:

1. Don’t spend too much time in the shower

Yes, it does sound like bad news because there’s nothing more comforting than a long, hot shower, especially when it’s so cold outside. The problem, however, is that hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and lead to more dryness. So, limit that time spent under the shower to reduce dryness. What’s more, regulate the temperature of the water, and keep it lukewarm instead of overheating it.

2. Use a humidifier

Winter months are naturally drying for the skin, but the room heaters we use excessively during in the harsh cold, can amplify the issue and how. Using a humidifier introduces moisture to the air in the room, which can then prevent your skin from becoming dry.

3. Moisturise right after having a bath

Your skin stays slightly damp, after you have had a bath. When you apply a moisturiser at that point, the skin is able to easily absorb it and lock in the moisture. This keeps your skin from getting dry and also helps it stay hydrated for a longer period of time. So, not only should you make sure you’re using a generous amount of moisturiser, but also that you’re applying it right after a bath.

4. Develop a skin routine for the season

The winter months bring along specific skin problems that will require tailored solutions. Your summer skincare routine might not be able to tackle the problem as efficiently. Hence, you will need to develop a skincare routine for the winter season that can tackle the problem of dryness. Choosing products that are known for their moisturising quality can be helpful.

5. Wear your socks to sleep

Most people will face the problem of dry feet during the winter months, which can ultimately lead to cracks that can hurt. Apply a moisturiser or petroleum jelly and wear socks before going to bed. It will really help to keep your feet moisturised, even during the harsh winter, preventing painful cracks.

All it takes is a little effort, and some changes to your routine to keep your skin healthy!
