The new IT ingredient in the skincare world is Cannabidiol or CBD oil, which is extracted from Cannabis plants. Its benefits range from anti-ageing to acne prevention. The studies around hemp seed oil have been so promising that many brands have given it a permanent place in their skincare products. But does it really make a visible difference to your skin? To answer that, we checked with an expert.

Health Shots got in touch with Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, Aesthetic Physician, Isaac Luxe, who answered all the questions around the hype of CBD oil for skin.

Is CBD oil intoxicating like its other notorious counterpart marijuana?

First thing we do when we hear Cannabis is ‘raise an eyebrow’. Dr Gupta says, “Well, both hemp seed oil or CBD oil are currently popular constituents in topical skin care products. The intoxicating matter in Cannabis plants is THC content in it which is usually lost while extracting the CBD oil. All the components of hemp, including trace quantities of THC, are present in full-spectrum CBD oil.”
So, topical application of it won’t set you rolling. If you know, you know!

Are there any side-effects of using CBD oil?

According to Dr Gupta, “Although a majority of people find them to be very safe and beneficial, some people don’t want to use steroids at all. To bridge that gap, CBD may be a useful non-steroidal treatment. CBD has never shown any side effects when it comes to skincare. CBD, especially if taken by mouth, can damage your liver. However, taking CBD can potentially be harmful. While THC is absent from broad-spectrum CBD oil, it does contain a variety of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids produced from hemp.

Who can use CBD oil for skin and Is it safe for pregnant women?

Dr Gupta advises, “Cannabidiol offers some strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory advantages which can be helpful in treating skin disorders including inflammation, dryness, and free radical damage, as stated in research on the substance’s therapeutic benefits. So, CBD is potentially safe to use for all.”

“However, I strongly advise against using CBD in any form, whether it be a cream or an oral tablet if you are pregnant or nursing. The FDA is still researching the security of CBD-infused supplements, food, and cosmetics. So, we must tread carefully.” adds Dr Gupta.

What are some of the benefits of CBD oil for skin?

  1. CBD also shows anti-inflammatory effects on the glands that secrete oil. Dr Gupta firmly believes that CBD is a ‘promising therapeutic drug’ for the treatment of acne.
  2. One way topical application of CBD helps reduce apparent signs of aging is through its antioxidant properties. CBD anti-ageing lotions noticeably improve conditions like wrinkles and fine lines
  3. If you’re dealing with skin conditions like dull skin, and reddish skin tone, turn to skincare products with CBD oil. They help in combating free-radical damage and lowering the appearance of inflammation.

CBD oil may be found in just about anything you can imagine. You may choose from numerous hemp-infused skincare ranging from serums and sunscreen to chapsticks, lotions, and cleansers.
