We all know the wonders of superfoods like kale and broccoli, but did you know even lemongrass can benefit your health in so many ways? Yes ladies, this humble herb that has a zesty aroma is often used in Thai curries and cocktails, but you can also use it to shed that stubborn fat or relieve stress.

Interestingly, this tropical plant has been used for generations in India, and is a favourite in Ayurvedic practices. Lemongrass has immunity-boosting properties, and you know how important it is to build your body’s defence mechanism, especially during the pandemic.

So without taking any more time, let’s get down to the benefits of lemongrass. We have Dr Ritika Samaddar, dietician and nutritionist at Max Healthcare, Saket, Delhi, to tell you all about it.

1. Helps with digestive issues
Research suggests that lemongrass has always been used to treat digestive issues like constipation, bloating or even indigestion. Lemongrass contains an element called citral, which proves to be helpful when it comes to stomach-related issues.

“What’s more, it is packed with antioxidants and boasts anti-inflammatory properties, so regular consumption of lemongrass will do a whole lot of good,” says Dr Samaddar.

2. Improves anemia
Research suggests that drinking a cup of lemongrass tea every single day for a month can help to increase haemoglobin levels, and increase the red blood cells in your body. This is because lemongrass is packed with a host of nutrients including folic acid, copper, thiamine, iron and zinc. So ladies, make yourself a cup of this aromatic tea, and drive away anemia!

“Replacing regular tea with lemongrass tea is a good idea, since it is tannin and caffeine-free, and works wonders for your health,” says Dr. Samaddar.

3. Promotes weight loss
Now we know why the biggest celebrities in B-town swear by lemongrass tea! After all, this earthy concoction helps to accelerate your metabolism, and promotes weight loss. Besides, it is also a natural diuretic, which means it also helps you lose excess water weight from your body. It’s a total win-win!

4. Controls blood pressure
Lemongrass is high in potassium, which makes it perfect to control blood pressure levels. This is because the potassium levels help in production of urine, and promotes blood circulation. And eventually, it helps to lower your blood pressure, and at the same time, purifies your liver too!

5. Gives you healthy hair and skin
This might come as a huge surprise, but lemongrass can be your answer to clear skin and long locks! Lemongrass boasts of antibacterial as well as anti-fungal properties, making it a good way to cleanse your skin. For this, you need to mix a few drops of lemongrass oil to a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil, and apply it on your skin.
