Sexual satisfaction is extremely important when you are in a relationship. But after being in a romantic relationship for a few years or delivering children, women tend to get concerned about the stretching of their vaginas. At times, the elasticity of the vagina even comes in the way of sexual pleasure. Now, women can consult cosmetic surgeons to work on the vaginal tissues. That’s when the term “vaginal rejuvenation treatment” pops up. It consists of several procedures, and an expert says that vaginal rejuvenation may even help to improve your sex life.

Being a mother is a very happy moment for most women, but delivering children also means the elasticity of your vagina getting affected.

Health Shots connected with Dr Jyoti Bhaskar, Additional Director, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Patparganj, to know more about vaginal rejuvenation treatment and its benefits.

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

The name of the treatment gives away its meaning, but in technical terms, vaginal rejuvenation is a female genital cosmetic surgical intervention that is done on a woman’s request. Dr Bhaskar said that vaginal rejuvenation consists of many procedures that are performed to decrease the average diameter of the vagina and to improve its elasticity. It can be done surgically by procedures like removal of excessive skin, vaginal tissue and tightening of vaginal wall muscles that lead to decrease in diameter of the vaginal opening.

There are non-traditional surgical procedures available for vaginal rejuvenation as well. They involve the use of laser technology, which are fractional CO2 laser and erbium YAG laser. They help to tighten the vagina.

How does vaginal rejuvenation treatment impact your sex life?

Better sex life

There are two main benefits of these procedures, and one of them is improvement in sex life. Bhaskar shared that in women, after vaginal child birth or with increasing age, the vagina loses its elasticity. It becomes dry and loose and the opening may even become lax. This then leads to pain during sex, and ultimately, loss of sexual enjoyment. Vaginal rejuvenation treatment may benefit a woman who is looking for sexual satisfaction, said the expert.

Helps with menopause

The procedures can be beneficial to women who have hit menopause. It’s been observed that due to loss of estrogens, the vaginal mucosa becomes thin, dry and the whole of the vagina undergoes atrophy, which leads to vaginal irritation, discharge, pain during sex. There are also urinary complaints like repeated infections. These women may also benefit from these procedures if the menopausal hormone therapy is not effective, said Bhaskar.

Which age group mostly goes for vaginal rejuvenation?

Most women who undergo these procedures are in their 40s or above. They are the ones who have completed their families and are on the brink of menopause. But some young women aged between 20 and 40 also ask for these procedures, said the expert.

  • She also suggested to apply cold compress, ice packs to the surgical area to help decrease the swelling and pain.
