Going out, meeting people, spending time with them, and getting to know each other are all part of what it is to be social. All in all, it comes down to being friendly to everyone, including strangers. However, interacting with people can be really intimidating, especially when you try to be humorous. As a result, not everyone enjoys interacting with others.

Some people enjoy spending their weekends with friends and family, while others prefer to be by themselves. While there’s nothing wrong with unwinding at home and binge-watching your favourite show after a long week, you should still socialise with other people to avoid showing symptoms that show you hate socialising.

HealthShots spoke to Dr Sonal Anand, Psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, Mumbai to understand if you are someone who doesn’t like to socialise with others.

Is it normal to not like socialising with others?

As humans, we are supposed to be social people and are meant to thrive together. However, not all humans can have the same personalities and so it is quite normal to have people on both sides of the behavioural spectrum, says Dr Anand.

She adds, “Sometimes introverts don’t like to have shallow conversations and are wrongly labelled as being less social. Not liking socialising should however be distinguished from social phobia, paranoia, or other mental disorders leading to low self-image, depression, and resultant avoidance of others.” In addition, not socialising with others can also be a productivity problem.

10 signs you hate socialising

Look out for these 10 symptoms that show you hate socialising:

1. Preference for doing things by oneself: If you prefer doing things on your own without any interference from others, then it shows that you do not like to socialise.

2. You like being alone: If you are one of those people who like to spend more and more time alone or like to indulge in an activity that doesn’t count for the participation of two people then this is also a symptom.

3. Not liking conversations: Not liking deep discussions or not liking to sit and talk with someone for a long time shows that you are not a social person.

4. Dislike meeting someone new: Do you avoid meeting people even during weekends? That simply means you may hate being around people or you may worry about rejection as a result of the conversation.

Being a social person helps you develop mentally. So, put in some effort for your own sake if not for others.
