Respecting and caring for older members of the family is a value that must be ingrained in us and taught to the younger ones. The elderly members in our family are at that stage of their lives where they need utmost love, care, and attention in all terms. If you are looking for ways to keep your elders happy and healthy, we are here to help you with the same.

Health Shots got in touch with Dr Prateek Bhardwaj, Senior Consultant Physiotherapist, COO, Vesta Elder Care, who shared many ways to keep the health of your elders in check.

Here are 6 superb ways to keep your elders happy, healthy and fit:

1. Spend time with them

People are generally so engrossed in their lives that they often forget to pay attention to the elder members of the family. Due to the busy lifestyle of the rest of the family members, the elders have no one to talk to. They feel lonely and ultimately become vulnerable to mental health issues. It is essential to make them feel valued and loved by all. You can do this by spending time with them, talking to them, and involving them in family conversations, even if it is just for a short amount of time. This will make them feel listened to and valued.

2. Be gentle and polite

Older adults can sometimes get hard to bear because the mental stress they go through due to their age and medical conditions can get too much for them to handle. They might feel anxious and worried for no reason and might constantly require the presence of someone by their side. It might get too much for you to bear at times, but remember that you must be very polite and gentle in your behaviour. Your rude behaviour can deeply hurt them and further negatively impact their health.

3. Seek their advice

Dr Bhardwaj says, “Involving the elderly members in family conversations makes them feel valued and happy. So, make sure you seek their advice and opinion on family matters since they are elderly. This would make your elders happy, heard, respected and valued.”

4. Routine medical checkups

Since the elderly are more prone to diseases and health problems, they must have regular health checkups and medical tests. If they have any problem, it can be treated initially. Ensure to keep a check on them at all times. Do not take any symptom lightly. Consult a doctor at the earliest.

5. Proper sleep and diet

“Apart from the routine checkup, ensure they have their medicines on time and a proper diet. Memory loss is a common issue to elderly people. Hence, keep a check on them at all times. Ensure they get sufficient rest and sleep to keep tiredness and other health problems at bay. If they are unable to fall asleep at time, it is advisable that you consult a professional,” Dr Bhardwaj told Health Shots.

6. Keep them physically active

Take the elder members of your family out for a walk, make them do some light exercises, and encourage the children in the family to play light physical games with them. Keeping the elders physically active is the way to keep them away from many health problems and physically and mentally healthy.
