Headaches can occur due to hundreds of reasons. One of these can be gas. Many people suffer from headaches as a result of gastric problems or acidity. Gas headaches are aggravating and inconvenient since you end up dealing with two health issues at once; gas and headache. If you don’t treat this double trouble, it can wreak havoc on your health. It’s crucial to know what a gastric headache is in order to comprehend what it is and how to treat it.

Dr. Bipin Jibhkate, Consultant critical care medicine, and ICU director at Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road, Mumbai, spoke to Health Shots about the link between gas and headache.

Causes of headache due to gas

Gastric headaches are probably seen due to indigestion or other common gastrointestinal problems like acidity and gas. Dr Jibhkate says, “The gut and brain link is well-established and some people will have headaches due to problems in the gastrointestinal system.” This means the body has not been able to access the required quantities of food, leading to headaches.

He adds, “Certain conditions such as Helicobacter pylori infection, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disorder), gastroparesis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and celiac disease can also induce a headache.”
