Maintaining oral hygiene is extremely important. Good oral and dental health can prevent bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. A healthy mouth may also keep away many other disorders.

A Dental Health foundation study suggested that oral hygiene can both cause and indicate overall health. The presence of oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with a severe form of gum disease (periodontitis) might play a role in some diseases. Alternatively, diseases such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS can lower the body’s resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe.

Having a great smile not only indicates a healthy body but is also considered an attractive feature.

Here are 5 ways to maintain oral hygiene for a healthier life:

1. Floss
This helps remove food particles that may not have been missed while brushing. Flossing ensures that there is no plaque on the teeth that could have otherwise led to tartar formation.

Flossing makes the teeth look brighter too.

2. Quit smoking
Whatever may be your argument, smoking can never be a good habit. Smoking weakens the immune system and is associated with the onset of gum disease.
The gum ailments gradually affect the attachment of bone and soft tissue to your teeth. Bad breath, tooth discoloration, inflammation of salivary glands, the buildup of plaque and loss of bone within the jaw are all associated with smoking.

3. Brush twice daily
It might sound like a cliche, but this is still one of the best ways to ensure that your teeth remain in good health. Cleaning the tongue is also considered important since it can harbor bacteria.

Techniques of proper brushing include placing the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums and gently moving it back and forth in short strokes. Brush both outer and inner tooth surfaces.
